Gingival recession describes the loss of gums and bone at the neck of the teeth. This can be caused by incorrect tooth position, orthodontic treatment, improper brushing, previous procedures and parafunctions (bruxism). The result is the exposure of the neck of the teeth, which is painful to stimuli (sour, cold) and aesthetically disturbing. Prior to surgical treatment, the primary cause must be removed to ensure a successful and long-lasting treatment outcome.
The procedure is performed in local anaesthesia and lasts 30 to 60 minutes. There are several methods of treatment by moving the surrounding gingiva or transplanting it. The method depends on the area of recession, the type of gingiva and the size of the defect. The wound is sutured with surgical sutures, which are removed 7 to 10 days after surgery.
