If you are concerned about the position, shape or contour of your chin, chin surgery may be a good option for you to consider. Sometimes a small chin can even cause a double chin. Genioplasty is a commonly performed plastic surgery procedure and you can leave the clinic the same day.

Asymmetry of the chin. - Shape and position of the chin.
- Chin reduction.
- Chin augmentation (with osteotomy or implant).
Sometimes we can correct minor shape with hyaluronic acid fillers, especially in small chins.
If your bite is not correct or you have problems with snoring (obstructive sleep apnea syndrome) we can also combine this procedure with orthodontic treatment and mandible surgery (Bilateral sagittal split osteotomy – BSSO).
Description
Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. It takes 60-90 minutes. Most of the time the incision is in the mouth and there will be no visible scars. Exception is a chin implant where the operation is performed with a small submental incision. Most of the time the classic intraoral approach gives better, more natural results. After exposure of the chin, we can do reduction or augmentation or reshape the chin. If osteotomies are preformed, you will get titanium screws and plates for fixation. These are very small and usually the patient doesn’t even know they have them. After the surgery we use resorbable sutures, if submental approach is used the stiches will be removed in 1-2 weeks. Surgical wrap is applied around the chin.
Chin implant.
Sometime we can do the operation with chin implant. It is usually from silicon. It is inserted with the incision in the first crest under the chin on the neck. The scar remains because of that hidden. In this type of surgery we can only augment the chin.
Postoperative recovery
- Day 1-2: Cold compressions, on the second day we remove the bandage
- Week 1: Normal activities. Decreased bruising, gradual decrease of swelling
- Week 6: Normal sport activities if osteotomies were performed
